A friend of mine opened his wife’s underwear drawer and picked up a silk paper- wrapped package:
‘This, – he said – isn’t any ordinary package.’
He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box.
‘She got this the first time we went to New York , 8 or 9 years ago.
She has never put it on , was saving it for a special occasion.
Well, I guess this is it.
He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral house, his wife had just died.
He turned to me and said:
‘Never save something for a special occasion.
Every day in your life is a special occasion’.
I still think those words changed my life.
Now I read more and clean less.
I sit on the porch without worrying about anything.
I spend more time with my family, and less at work.
I understood that life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not survived through.
I no longer keep anything.
I use crystal glasses every day…
I’ll wear new clothes to go to the supermarket, if I feel like it..
I don’t save my special perfume for special occasions, I use it whenever I want to.
The words ‘Someday….’ and ‘ One Day…’ are fading away from my dictionary.
If it’s worth seeing, listening or doing,
I want to see, listen or do it now….
I don’t know what my friend’s wife would have done if she knew she wouldn’t be there the next morning, this nobody can tell..
I think she might have called her relatives and closest friends.
She might call old friends to make peace over past quarrels.
I’d like to think she would go out for Chinese, her favourite food.
It’s these small things that I would regret not doing, if I knew my time had come..
Each day, each hour, each minute, is special.
Live for today, for tomorrow is promised to no-one…..
This has nothing to do with helping you build your business.
This is a copy of an email I received recently and wanted to share it with you
Just remember while it is essential to be focused ….. we only live once.
Cheers

I love this message. Just imagine if each of us engaged in this level of self care and and just plain life. I agree that it’s so important to live your life in the here and now. I have my great grandmother’s dishes and I actually use them from time to time. It seems a shame not to. Although in order to keep them looking nice I have to wash them by hand.
And it sounds like you and I have about the same affinity for cleaning house. While it’s nice to have a relatively clean house it’s certainly not necessary to strive for sterile; that would be my brother and his wife.
It’s nice to read something that is more about doing for me as opposed to always reading about building my business. In my opinion I build a better business when I am also enjoying my life. I love to sit on the porch during a torrential downpour. Of course it’s equally cool to get drenched in a warmish summer rain.

Bryan I love this message. I used to do things like that – set the “good stuff” aside until I had a special occasion to use it. A similar experience broke me of that habit and now I purposely enjoy every day. Thanks so much for the reminder and inspiration!

Hi Marty,
Good to see you again… thanks for sharing your thoughts.
We all do seem to save things for a special day … when that special day is today.

Very inspiring post, Bryan. I particularly related to the decision not to keep anything. The older I get, the more I realize that a life spent acquiring experiences is much more satisfying than one spent acquiring material goods.
Experiences are priceless. No material things on this earth can replace how valuable our life experiences are. It is a treasure that money or anything cannot buy.

Hi Bryan,
We are living for a reason and that is to make something happen, we can’t just live life like it’s nothing. Everyday is special, everyday is a gift and should treat it like one. They call today “present” because it is a gift to us. Another chance.
Thank you for sharing this story. yes, I agree with that everyday is special, and we should cherish them. If you do not want to be regret, please cherish the everyday and everyone you meet.

This is a touching story, people need to know that life isn’t a joke, but to live life to the fullest as well as your last cause everyday isn’t promised.
